Looking for Black Metal with Dark and Evil Atmosphere!!

The black metal scene is oversaturated with cheesy Burzum clones, Mayhem imitators, or Dimmu Borgir wannabes. That, we all know. So instead of dwelling on the "sorry state" of modern black metal, why not do the opposite and look for the true gems in the rough? (so the speak)

I'm talking about those black metal bands with evil, macabre, and very sinister atmospheres. Those bands that make you wake up in sweat at night, rather than put you to sleep (lol)

I'm looking for the most vile and blood chilling acts, with the focus on atmosphere rather than just "cool sounding" black metal riffs, fast drumming, or evil vocals... post your best!

By 'vile and blood chilling' I take it you mean Phantom. The entire album Ascension of Erebos, Leader of the Gods is full of inhuman demonic music.

Do you mean exclusively old school stuff like Helgrind, Von, Lord Foul, Reiklos, or do you also take newer entries? Stuff like Sissourlet and Neraines, while erring on the newer side of black metal, is not to be overlooked!

You didn't specify what type of black metal exactly? I take it from your description that you're looking for atmospheric BM, but there is a lot of variation to choose from. Evil "atmosphere" can mean a lot of things.

If you're more into the ritualistic aspects, I do recommend the Phantom album Ascension of Erebos, Leaders of the Gods that Sauron suggested above.

Otherwise you should refine your question so it's more understandable. Also, read this guide on the different styles of black metal to help you get a better grasp of what type of music you're looking for.

If the goal is claustrophobic and nightmarish atmosphere, as the OP suggested, the debut album Verminlust and the sophomore Archangel are all you need.

I'm not sure how much this qualifies as macabre and/or sinister, but since someone mentioned Neraines.

It's more Burzum than Phantom, I'll give you that, but this track always gave me chills. Try listening to it alone at night for maximum effect.

New black metal bands suck on principle. I don't know why but they all have the same plastic sound. It's like some very weird rules they have: "you can't play good music" or you're not part of the Pitchfork club. A sort of self-selecting dysgenic cult for morons.

The entire genre is going down the drain because black metal bands just can't release any good songs or albums anymore. There is Khranial who is pretty decent... all the way until you read their stupid lyrics like "Fountain of Smeggma" or "Meth for Morannon".
