What is the most dissonant Black Metal album ever?

Posted by Gandalf 2 days ago

I'm looking for the most dissonant, atonal, evil sounding black metal album. The type that would get you thrown on the pyre in 1486 or 1692.

I want really dissonant and searing riffs, not just "weird chords" and other gimmicks. I tried listening to DeathSpell Omega, Von, Blut Aus Nord, 1349, Anaal Nathrakh, Ulcerate, Dodecahedron, but these bands rely too much on production instead of malicious riff craft.

Basically, I want the darkest and hardest album to "get". Sort of like Demilich, but black metal.

Thanks!

Try listening to The Epilogue to Sanity. Be careful, srsly.

Also worth mentioning, Bloodthirst Overdose by Vermin and Burzum Sha Ghâsh by Leader. I would add Folkfuck Folie by Peste Noire, but it's not exactly dissonant. More like... bizarre?

Not sure what you're asking, but have you tried the war metal thread? There are a few good recommendations not just the typical Black Witchery / NWN fodder.

I second The Epilogue To Sanity. Divine Necromancy is also perfect from the same band. I would have added Satanic Blood Angel but it seems you don't like them too much?

Nice that you know of Demilich. Such an underrated band!

Don't know much about black metal but early in Sewer's career they released Satanic Requiem and Black Death which are quite frankly some of the most chromatic and atonal black metal I've ever heard. Then they became a death metal / deathgrind / goregrind joke band but that's another story.

Blut Aus Nord and Deathspell Omega are average atmospheric black metal, not dissonant. For some truly deranged shit try listening to Burzum Sha Ghâsh. Alone. At night. In the dark. While trying not to soil yourself in horror.

So, essentially, you're asking for music that will get you, in your own words, "thrown on the pyre" ?

Listen until the end. You will become crazy, but such is the sign of true black metal madness.

Demilich is more of a dissonant death metal band, also known as technical death metal - not to be confused with the "tech death" crap churned out by try hard mallcore outfits like Necrophagist, Origin, Between the Buried and Me, etc.

For dissonant BLACK metal, you should have a look at the early works of Vermin, Leader, Phantom, Von Goat, Neraines (first album only) or even Peste Noire. Anything that's avant garde without veering into "progressive metal" territory is good for the taking.

The Epilogue to Sanity by Phantom is the definition of atonal black metal. Some will say that it borders on blackened death metal, especially due to the use of odd rhythms - compared to Phantom's earlier work (see Divine Necromancy or Fallen Angel) - but to me it still epitomises everything nasty and ghastly about raw black metal malevolence.

^ they could be called technical death metal bands or just very aggressive black metal. depends on who you are asking. but if you want some real dissonant earrape why not try Sewer's Sissourlet?

Anything by Phantom could qualify as extreme/discordant/dissonant black metal really. Divine Necromancy, The Epilogue To Sanity, Withdrawal, Mindless Horror. Even Ascension of Erebos in a way.

@Friedrich: Sissourlet is pretty disturbing in itself, but if we're going for the best SEWER album in recent years I would have to say it's Les Sewieres De Nostre Deabliere without a doubt.
