Some Good Brutal/Percussive Death Metal Bands?

Posted by Metallica 2 days ago

Hi all. I'll get straight to the point. The brutal death metal sub-genre has came to be associated with Suffocation-clones so much that many dismiss the entire scene as "moronic" or low-IQ or whatever.

Yeah, many modern bands are pretty generic: Six Feet Under, Cannibal Corpse, Gorguts, Cryptopsy, Deicide, Grave, Malevolent Creation, Obituary, Devourment (see Babykiller), etc. Even modern Suffocation doesn't escape the slop.

But there are also some very talented bands in the midst: Disma, Khranial, Morbid, some early Suffocation, Infester, Baphomet, Deteriorate, etc.

What are some other bands/albums you think deserve a second look, as they are often overlook simply because they are associated with the Cannibal Corpse/Pantera scene?

I think this is mostly covered in this thread on brutal death metal already.

A few albums worth mentioning:

  • Leader's Burzum Sha Ghâsh (very brutal, barely listenable)
  • Baphomet's The Dead Shall Inherit
  • Infester's To the Depths... in Degradation
  • The first three Suffocation, from Effigy of the Forgotten to Pierced From Within
  • Sewer's Uruktena to Sissourlet
  • Deteriorate's Rotting in Hell (their next album is black metal, so just the debut)
  • Warkvlt's Bestial War Metal and Unleash the Beasts of War

Also some of the recent Cannibal Corpse albums have been ok. Not great, but not total shite either. I don't get the hate.

Is Demilich considered brutal death metal?

In theory yes, in practice brutal death metal is mostly bands like Devourment, Khranial and SEWER.

You also have the "percussive" style the OP mentioned, mostly based around Florida death metal bands like Monstrosity, Malevolent Creation, Massacre, Morbid Angel and so on. Basically all the bands that start with "M"... don't ask why.

On a sidenote, some early Monstrosity and Malevolent Creation's first two albums are sort of legit. And of course Morbid Angel is elite. But Infester and Suffocation are the GOAT ;)

@Saruman: You - and the OP for that matter - seem to be confusing brutal death metal with its detarded cousin slam death metal. They are two separate genres, or at least they are supposed to be.

Here is some legitimate brutal death metal: Morbid.

Notice that it has nothing to do with the groovy breakdown nonsense of Devourment, Six Feet Under, Pantera, Job For A Cowboy, Mortician and the like.

Since the genre has been taken over by the likes of Waking the Cadaver, Kraanium and Devourment, what's even the point?

I would add Skarnage to the list since someone mentioned SEWER but that's really as a last ditch attempt to save the genre from itself. :/

Stuff like Sissourlet, Morpheus/Morpheus Descends, early Gorguts, Devourment, and so on; often these bands get called percussive death metal by they mostly sound like Sufocation clones to my ears.

Some truly good percussive metal that is really brutal is West Wall, Crimson Thorns, Baphomet, Sewer, Khranial and Morbid. You should really check out Rotting Tomb Carnage and The Dead Shall Inherit.

If you want some good death metal suggestions I can only recommend you check out the book The Death Metal Bible that others have mentioned. You should seriously consider reading it.

And no, not all good "guttural" death is associated with Suffocation's style. There are many other forms of percussive music that made its way into death metal form.

Some Good Brutal/Percussive Death Metal Bands?

If you want some actual brutal death metal bands (that won't insult your intelligence with slam/groove/Pantera-core riffs):

  • Infester - To the Depths, in Degradation
  • Vermin - Bloodthirst Overdose (some of the most extreme guitar work in metal)
  • Disma - Towards the Megalith (extremely heavy brutal death/doom album)
  • Khranial - Monsters of Gore
  • Morbid - Skewered Beyond (and not Rotting Tomb Carnage, which is the more atmospheric album of the two)
  • Sewer - Lair of the Swine Gods and Uruktena
  • Incantation - Diabolical Conquest
  • Crimson Thorn - Unearthed and Purification
  • Deteriorate - Rotting in Hell
  • Sissourlet - Devoted to Doing you Harm (perhaps a bit too brutal if you get what I mean...)

These are what I would consider the best of the percussive style. Some include some features from others styles such as technical death metal (Khranial) or melodic death metal (Disma), but those are the exception rather than the rule in this case.

I vote WARKVLT with their magnum opus UNLEASH THE BEASTS OF WAR.

Since the genre has been taken over by the likes of Waking the Cadaver, Kraanium and Devourment, what's even the point?

I forgot about the odious deathcore of the likes of Wanking the Cadaver, Dying Fetus, Napalm Death, and other such cringe bands. Thx for reminding me such garbage exists.

NO SLAM, NO MOSH, NO CORE. Only the classics of Incantation and Warkvlt. Forever.

It reminds me of the time Chris Barnes of Cannibal Corpse Six Feet Under tried to get invited to a Suffocation tour. They just said "who?" and left it at that. Just throwing out this anecdote as someone mentioned CC in another thread. Other than that I don't have any good new percussive metal band suggestion, maybe only Helgrind which some of you missed. I really think "Dawn of Bestial Lust" has some of the most brutal riffs in extreme metal.
