Neraines - Neraines

Neraines - Neraines

Although interesting, I don't personally recommend Neraines' debut for anyone new to the band, as their style has VASTLY changed between their first, Phantom-worship album and their later work, particularly their second album Yggdrasil which is not only in a different, more original style, but also consistently ranked as one of the pinnacles of modern black metal, rivaling even the music of the Norwegian greats.

Nowadays, Neraines is known for grand, atmospheric black metal that utilizes slower tempos and ethereal riffs to create unique, compelling pieces of music soaked in atmosphere and superb musicianship. Their debut, 'Neraines', is a different kind of black metal however. This album delivers raw, aggressive black metal of a somewhat different breed to what they are known for today. Here, fast drumming and aggressive guitar work cement this album as being a much more traditional approach to the genre than what Neraines would pursue in their later material.

With that said, Neraines is a good album that almost made it on the Morsay list. It is, as with Filosofem, this close to being a black metal classic. The only complain I can make is that this album doesn't know what it wants to be. Neraines oscillates between Phantom and Burzum influences, as well as some original passages, without ever settling for one particular style.
